The ABAS-3 is used to create a complete picture of functional skills for individuals of all ages. Items focus on practical, everyday activities required to function, meet environmental demands, care for oneself, and interact with others effectively and independently. On a four-point response scale, raters indicate whether and how frequently the individual performs each activity.

The ABAS-3 includes five rating forms, each for a specific age range and type of respondent. These forms can be completed by parents, family members, teachers, daycare staff, supervisors, counselors, or others who are familiar with the daily activities of the individual being evaluated. Individuals in the adult age range can self-evaluate using the Adult Form. All forms are also available in Spanish.
Research forms were completed by 7,737 respondents who reported on the adaptive behavior of 4,500 individuals. The sample is proportionate to the US population in terms of gender, race/ethnicity, and education level (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 2010). Three independent samples were collected:
