Conners 3®

Overview

Overview

The Conners 3rd Edition™ (Conners 3®) is a thorough assessment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and its most common comorbid problems and disorders in children and adolescents aged 6 to 18 years. It is a multi-informant assessment that takes into account home, social, and school settings, with rating forms for parents, teachers, and youth. School psychologists, clinicians, psychiatrists, pediatricians, child protection agencies, and mental health workers can count on the Conners 3 to be a reliable and dependable tool capable of supporting them in the diagnostic and identification process.

Key Features:
  • Inform your ADHD diagnosis with results that have direct connections to DSM-5 symptom criteria and IDEIA legislation
  • Develop informed intervention and treatment strategies by identifying specific challenge areas to work on
  • Monitor response to intervention and its effectiveness with detailed progress reports
  • Assess common comorbid disorders (Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder) to assist with differential diagnosis
  • Discover how ADHD symptoms are affecting the youth by looking at impairment items which indicate functioning in home, school and social settings
  • Spend less time on paperwork and more time with the youth with fast and easy to use administration and scoring, and easy to interpret reports
  • Gain a multi-rater perspective of the youth’s difficulties with a Parent, Teacher, and Self-report version

Normative Data

Normative Data

Assessment Reports provide detailed information about scores from a single administration, presented both numerically and graphically. An individual's scores are compared to those in the normative sample and elevations at the scale and subscale level are indicated.
Progress Reports compare the results of two to four administrations for the same individual to measure changes over time. These reports are ideal to use when monitoring treatment and intervention effectiveness.
Comparative Reports combine the results of different raters to provide an overview of an individual's scores from a multi-rater perspective. This highlights potentially important inter-rater differences in scores.

Components

Conners 3 Full-Length

The Conners 3 Parent, Teacher, and Self-Report full-length forms closely parallel each other and include every Conners 3 item. These forms convey the most detailed information of all the forms and include Content scales, DSM-5 Symptom scales, Conners 3AI, Conners 3GI, Anxiety and Depression Screener items, Severe Conduct Critical items, Validity scales, Impairment items, and Additional Questions. Conners 3 Parent and Teacher forms are used to rate youth 6-18 years, and the Self-Report form can be completed by youth 8-18 years.

Conners 3 Short

Conners 3 Short Parent, Teacher, and Self-Report forms closely parallel each other, and are a subset of items from the full-length forms. Short forms include a subset of items from the Conners 3 Content scales, the Positive Impression and Negative Impression scales, and the Additional Questions. These forms can be used as screeners and are also suitable for monitoring the impact of treatment or intervention programs.

Conners 3AI

For the Conners 3AI, the index contains the 10 items that best differentiate youth with ADHD from youth in the general population. It is useful as a quick check to see if further ADHD evaluation is warranted, particularly for pre-evaluation or group screening purposes. This index is available in parent, teacher, and self-report formats. See page 34 for more information.

Conners 3GI

For the Conners 3GI, the index contains the 10 most predictive items from the original Conners Parent and Teacher Rating Scales with updated normative data. This index is useful for monitoring treatment effectiveness and changes over time. This index is available in parent and teacher formats. See page 34 for more information.

The Conners 3 consists of three standard forms: Parent (Conners 3-P), Teacher (Conners 3-T) and Self-Report (Conners 3-SR). All forms can be administered online, by email, or on paper. Following administration, Conners 3 forms can be scored using the MHS QuikScoreTM Format or through the MHS Online Assessment Center+. Three useful reports can then be generated online.

Conners 3 DSM-5 Scoring Update

The Conners 3rd Edition (Conners 3) has been updated to provide a new scoring option for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) Symptom Scales.

The Conners 3 now has the following two scoring options for the MHS Online Assessment Center+:

  1. DSM-IV-TR™: The DSM Symptom Scales are scored based on diagnostic criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR).
  2. DSM-5: The DSM Symptom Scales are scored based on diagnostic criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5).

Updated DSM-5 handscored forms for the Conners 3 Parent, Teacher, and Self-Report QuikScore™ forms are now available for purchase. For pricing and ordering details, visit DSM-5 pricing or the pricing tab. Please note, an error has been found on the Conners 3 – Parent Quikscore form for the DSM-5 Symptom Count score on the ADHD inattentive scale. View full details here.

Complete details regarding the Conners 3 DSM-5 scoring option are available via the Conners 3 DSM-5 Supplement. Contact Client Services and choose one of the two options:

  1. Purchase the DSM-5 Supplement paper copy by contacting Customer Service or select the pricing tab to place your order. Product Code: C30SUP, Price: $15

Reliability

Both test-retest reliability and internal consistency are very good for the Conners 3 scales and indices. Internal consistency coefficients for the total sample range from .77 to .97, and 2- to 4-week test-retest reliability coefficients (Cronbach's alpha) range from .71 to .98 (all correlations significant, p < .001). Inter-rater reliability coefficients range from .52 to .94.

Validity

Support for the validity of the structure of the Conners 3 forms was obtained using factor analytic techniques on derivation and confirmatory samples. Convergent and divergent validity were supported by examining the relationship between Conners 3 scores and other related measures. Statistical examination of the ability of the Conners 3 to differentiate youth with ADHD from youth in the general population and from youth in other clinical groups (including those with Disruptive Behavior Disorders and Learning Disorders) strongly supported the measure’s discriminative validity.

Over 100 site coordinators throughout the U.S. and Canada collected 6,825 Conners 3 assessments. The normative sample of 3,400 was extracted from 4,682 ratings of children and youth from the general population. The normative sample includes 50 boys and 50 girls at each age with racial/ethnic distribution that closely matches that of the U.S. population (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 2000). The normative sample also includes a reasonable spread of children and youth across various parental education levels, and respondents from various geographical regions throughout the U.S. and Canada. Additionally, 2,143 ratings of children and youth with various clinical diagnoses were collected, and stringent procedures were employed in order to ensure the accuracy of the diagnoses.

Separate norms are provided for male and female children and youth in 1-year age intervals. Combined gender norms are also available.
