Reliability and Validity

The HPSI was developed following rigorous test-development procedures. The manual covers the historical foundation upon which the HPSI is based and offers a series of case studies as concrete examples of the HPSI's applicability in a variety of clinical settings. Detailed data are presented, including:

  • Internal consistency and test-retest stability, as primary indices of test reliability
  • Various studies revealed values representing extremely acceptable levels of internal consistency reliability for a screening inventory
  • Holden, using a four-week retesting interval with 108 undergraduates, found reliabilities to exceed .83 for every HPSI scale
  • A number of factor analyses on the HPSI items
  • A number of studies with the HPSI that examined scale intercorrelation, supporting the notion that the Psychiatric Symptomatology, Social Symptomatology, and Depression scales are distinct concepts
  • Values indicating acceptable levels of validity for a quick-screening form, and supporting the HPSI’s validity index
  • Criterion, convergent validity, and its ability to detect clinical changes

Normative data for general adults, psychiatric adults, male adult psychiatric offenders, high school students, and university students are provided in the manual.
